Intent

It is our intent at St John’s Primary School to provide all of our children with a high-quality education in Modern Foreign Languages (MFL), which develops their love of learning about other languages and cultures. Children in KS2 are taught to read, write, speak and listen in French, and also to have a solid understanding of grammar and sentence structure. We try to encourage children to take an interest in the French culture and gain an understanding of the differences and similarities to their own lives. It is our intention that children leave St Johns being confident to speak and listen in French and know how important languages are to their future as a global citizen.

Implementation

We strive to stimulate and encourage children’s curiosity about language and through a range of stimulus. Teachers provide children with two fifteen minute lessons per week where children study sentence structure and grammar in addition to regular speaking and listening. Working walls provide a reminder of the vocabulary and work they are completing that half term. KS2 enjoy a yearly French day where they can experience French culture. KS1 children enjoy airport day, when they ‘travel’ to France, Italy and Spain to learn about the country and its language.  St John’s follows Language Angels Scheme of work.

Impact

By the end of their time at St. John’s, our children will have been equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to speak, listen, read and write in French. Through twice weekly French lessons, children will build their confidence to converse in French about a range of topics and they will have learned about French culture. Assessment is through book scrutiny, pupil interviews and lesson observations.
